Gipfel Union Brewery Moved

March 18th, 2007

gipfel index

The historic Gipfel Union Brewery, standing at 423-427 W. Juneau Avenue since 1853, was moved one block east and across the street, next to the equally historical Sydney Hih building at Juneau and N. Old World 3rd St., on March 18, 2007. Get a closer look here.

The Gipfel Union Brewery was erected in 1853, part of “Brewery Row,” a stretch of brewing companies that once lined Juneau Ave. from Pabst on the west to Blatz on the east. David and Carl Gipfel brewed Weissbier (white beer) there until 1892. Since then, the building has been home to everything from harness manufacture and leather goods, soap-making and lastly, restaurant supplies.

The building won city historic designation in 1985, because it is a rare local example of Federal-style architecture and because it is one of Milwaukee’s oldest standing buildings of any kind.

Milwaukee Beer Museum Featured on Fox6

Fox 6 capture

Awesome story on Fox6 tonight by Jeremy Ross! Thank you so much! You can view the video here. Excellent job! The positive response this story has generated has been tremendous… confirming our original premise that Milwaukee not only deserves a beer museum, but wants one! The Milwaukee Beer Museum will be here soon. Thanks again!

Journal-Sentinel Cites Initiative

January 3rd, 2007

There was a very nice “Commentary” in the Dec. 31, 2006 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel by Patrick McIlheran, in which he wrote:

Do not say that Milwaukeeans lack enterprise.

Nor will we lack a beer museum, thanks to some enterprising souls who noticed that we lack one now. We may end up with several. Far from being a triviality to all but beer fans, this is a sign of a welcome stirring in our city.

Jim Kupferschmidt is the motivating force behind one of the efforts, the Milwaukee Beer Museum. It’s likely to be the first to welcome visitors. It already has a building, on S. 5th St. just north of National Ave., with the outside restored to its 1877 façade.

It also has the talent: Kupferschmidt and his associate aficionados are starting to refit the long unused interior with the help of Edward A. Green, former Milwaukee Public Museum art director and a designer of the Streets of Old Milwaukee display.

Thank you, Patrick, for recognizing our efforts of the past two years. We have made tremendous progress in less than a year with our building:

McIlheran concludes: Kupferschmidt doesn’t seem to want to rule any world but, rather, just to explain one. Still, his passion and initiative are a heartening example of just doing it. His museum may be a non-profit venture, but it’s a venture that could serve the city and inspire others.

That has been one of our primary goals since the beginning. Thanks again, Patrick!

Ghost Tour Sets Record

November 1st, 2006

The Milwaukee Beer Museum’s “Ghosts of Brewers Past” Forest Home Cemetery tour gets better and bigger every time we do it! Saturday, October 28, 2006 was no exception, as nearly 70 people took part in the walk… a 20% increase over the spring tour.

Thanks to the Beer Gods for perfect Wisconsin fall weather, to Jackie Loohauis for an excellent item in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s “Cue” section, to Marcy at the Holler House for hosting the pre-walk gathering, and to Dan Emmer of the Pabst Mansion for once again portraying Captain Frederick Pabst to perfection. All of you helped make this Ghost tour our best ever!!!

Check out our dedicated photo page to see pictures collected from all of our “Ghost” tours so far. Also keep an eye on our Site Page for progress on our building… a new picture was added on Nov. 1, 2006.

“Ghosts” in the Cue Section

October 27th, 2006

Awesome item in today’s Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel “Cue” section (thanks Jackie!) for the “Ghosts of Brewers Past” cemetery tour! Saturday, October 28, 2 p.m. - gather at the Holler House, 21st & Lincoln.

“Ghosts Of Brewers Past” Returns!

October 19th, 2006

Saturday, October 28, 2 p.m., the Milwaukee Beer Museum’s most popular event - “The Ghosts of Brewers Past” walking tour of Forest Home Cemetery returns! Check out the main page of the website for more details.

Speaking of vision…

October 19th, 2006

In an opinion piece in the October 15 Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Mr. Brian Back called for the establishment of a beer museum in Milwaukee. In today’s Journal-Sentinel, MBM President Jim Kupferschmidt replied, and declared that the Milwaukee Beer Museum indeed exists! At 722 South Fifth Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin!

Our building has been undergoing restoration all summer; the facade will be finished in a few weeks. For the remainder of the fall and into the winter, we will be working on interior exhibits and should have everything ready for a public grand opening in the spring of 2007. The vision IS becoming a reality! The Milwaukee Beer Museum… with Milwaukee in its name!

Record Turnout for “Ghost” Tour

May 24th, 2006

The weather was perfect, and so was the advance publicity – a well-placed write-up the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s “Cue” section (Thanks, Jackie!) brought a record crowd of 54 people to our semi-annual “Ghosts of Brewers Past” Forest Home Cemetery Tour on May 6. An all-time record number of graves were visited this time as well, but there are still more to add on this fall’s tour! The tour gathered at the Holler House before and after the free tour (Thanks, Marcy!). Thank you too, to the Forest Home Cemetery for allowing us to tour your beautiful, historic and scared place… the grounds never loooked better!

A Famous Neighbor’s Reflection…

May 24th, 2006

Interesting shot shows (by the reflection in the window) how the Milwaukee Beer Museum is right across the street from the former Schlitz Tivoli Palm Garden.

Restoration Progress

May 24th, 2006

Restoration of the museum site’s exterior has begun in earnest now that warmer weather has arrived. Stripping away un-original siding, layers of paint and accumulated stop-gap repairs has revealed what still needs to be done (re-creation of woodwork) and what remains to be restored (e.g., metal ventilation grates).
